For when a 24 month term feels too long

Contabo alternatives:
VPS hosts without the long contract

A short, fair list of providers you can use instead of Contabo, with the price, billing style, payment options and regions of each one.

How this shortlist is built

Facts come from each provider's public pages at the time of our check.

Term length first

Contabo prices assume long subscriptions, so we note for each host whether you pay hourly, monthly or by the year.

Comparable sizes

Where possible we quote a plan close to the size you would rent at Contabo, not just the cheapest line.

Disk type

NVMe or regular SSD is noted when the provider states it, because it affects databases and builds.

Payment options

Cards, PayPal, bank transfer, local methods and crypto, as listed by each company.

Verification

What a provider says it may request before an order goes live, from payment checks to ID scans.

Coverage

Contabo has a wide footprint, so we flag which alternatives can match it and which cannot.

Why look for something other than Contabo

Contabo's headline prices are low, and that is why most people start there. The catch is the fine print. At the time of our check, Cloud VPS 4 (4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD) was €5.50 a month as the effective rate of a 24 month subscription. Terms renew for the same length, and postpaid orders need four weeks of notice to cancel. Testing something for a week does not fit that model well.

Other reasons come up too. Core VPS plans use SSD, with NVMe reserved for the Performance line. Cloud VPS 4 had a 200 Mbit/s port. Contabo does not take cryptocurrency, and it says it must verify customer data, so an order under review can stall until you send an ID or a utility bill scan.

DataPasa: no term at all, billed per hour

DataPasa is the opposite of a two year commitment. You add funds to a balance in US dollars, starting at $5, and a server pays for itself one hour at a time, each hour charged in advance. There is no renewal date and no notice period: delete the VPS whenever you like and billing stops that hour. All plans use NVMe and dedicated vCPU, with a port of up to 1 Gbps.

Being fair about it: for 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM, DataPasa VPS-4 costs $12.16 a month against Contabo's €5.50 on a long term, so a server you keep for two years is cheaper at Contabo. DataPasa also has a single live location today.

  • Good for: servers you spin up and tear down often, tests, short campaigns, small always on services.
  • Price: from $1.81 a month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB NVMe. VPS-4 with 4 vCPU, 8 GB and 128 GB NVMe is $12.16.
  • Traffic: 32 TB a month from VPS-2 upward, 1 TB on VPS-1.
  • Payments: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PIX via Stripe, and around 100 cryptocurrencies and networks via Cryptomus.
  • Sign-up: email only. We ask for identity documents only if AML screening flags a deposit.
  • Locations: Falkenstein, Germany, with São Paulo, Brazil coming soon.

Hetzner Cloud: German, established, invoiced monthly

Hetzner is the alternative most Contabo users already know. It bills cloud servers by the hour with a monthly price cap, so there is no long term to sign. The bill comes after the month ends, and Hetzner's documentation says prepaying is not possible. It also offers a large body of documentation and community tutorials.

  • Good for: companies that want hourly flexibility, monthly invoices and several regions from one provider.
  • Price at the time of our check: CX23 (2 shared vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe) from $7.09 with IPv4, shown as unavailable. CPX12 (1 vCPU, 2 GB) from $14.09.
  • Payments: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay, SEPA direct debit for EUR, bank transfer and PayPal. No crypto and no Apple Pay.
  • Sign-up: may ask new customers for a government ID or a prepayment from their own credit card.
  • Locations: Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, Ashburn, Hillsboro and Singapore.

OVHcloud: the closest match on price per GB

If you like Contabo for the amount of RAM you get, OVHcloud is the nearest substitute among large European clouds. When we checked, its VPS-2 with 4 vCores, 8 GB RAM and 75 GB NVMe was $10.00 a month without commitment and $8.50 a month on a 12 month prepayment, before tax. The commitment is one year rather than two, and storage is NVMe on every VPS.

  • Good for: long running 4 GB and 8 GB servers that should include daily backups and anti-DDoS.
  • Billing: monthly, or a yearly commitment paid upfront for a lower rate.
  • Payments: cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro), PayPal or prepaid account credit, with no crypto among them.
  • Sign-up: orders may hit a random payment validation. We did not find published rules on ID documents.
  • Locations: nine countries (France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the UK, Canada, Singapore, Australia, India) plus Local Zones, close to Contabo's reach.

DigitalOcean: per second billing and managed extras

DigitalOcean solves the contract problem in a different way: Droplets are billed per second, with a 60 second minimum and a monthly cap. You pay more for the same RAM than at Contabo. A Basic Droplet with 2 vCPU and 4 GiB on shared CPU was $24 a month at the time of our check, and dedicated CPU started at $42. In return you get managed databases, Kubernetes, load balancers and block storage.

  • Good for: apps that will grow into managed services and need a polished control panel.
  • Billing: usage is invoiced at the start of the next month, or earlier when it passes a threshold. Prepayment is optional.
  • Payments: major cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Alipay, Link and ACH for some US accounts. Virtual and prepaid cards are not accepted.
  • Sign-up: a payment method is required before any resource is created and is used to check your identity.
  • Traffic: 500 GiB to 6,000 GiB of outbound transfer on Basic Droplets, depending on size.

LightNode: hourly billing in many countries

LightNode bills by the hour with no contract and caps hourly charges at 672 hours per calendar month, with monthly billing as an option. Its strength is reach: more than 40 locations on five continents, many of them in regions where Contabo has nothing, such as the Middle East, Africa and South America. Per GB of RAM it is much pricier than Contabo.

  • Good for: users clustered in one country where Contabo has no region.
  • Price at the time of our check: from $7.71 a month for 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB NVMe. A 2 vCPU, 4 GB plan was $14.70.
  • Payments: major cards including UnionPay, plus Alipay, Google Pay and PayPal. There was no crypto option.
  • Sign-up: no public verification rules on the pages we checked.
  • Traffic: 1 to 2 TB on the smaller plans.

How to pick the right Contabo alternative

Ask yourself how long the server needs to exist. If the answer is two years and the workload is mostly RAM or disk, Contabo may still be the cheapest choice, and OVHcloud is the closest rival. If the answer is unclear, a provider without a term protects you from paying for months you never use.

Then look at payments and paperwork. If you want to fund servers with crypto or PIX, or prefer not to send documents to open an account, DataPasa covers that. If you need a specific country, LightNode or DigitalOcean will likely have it.

  • Long term, maximum RAM: Contabo or OVHcloud.
  • Hourly with monthly invoices and a big community: Hetzner.
  • Managed services and per second billing: DigitalOcean.
  • A particular country outside Europe: LightNode.
  • No term, prepaid balance, crypto or PIX, NVMe on every plan: DataPasa.
